The Black Student Union (BSU) and Coalition for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) met with esteemed alumna Dr. Jackie Evans O.D. '06 to create goals and share ideas for the year. The students are excited to announce a series of dynamic plans and goals for this semester, centering on building a stronger community and celebrating Black culture across our school.
The focus includes fostering cultural awareness and engagement through Teach-Ins, cooking classes, and art installations that highlight Black poetry, storytelling, and visual art. We aim to connect students with community organizations through service drives and invite guest speakers from diverse backgrounds to inspire us with their experiences and expertise.
The BSU and The Coalition are also working to organize movie nights in Father Downey Garden, book clubs featuring notable Black authors and a curated bulletin board that showcases Black history and achievements. For Black History Month, which NDB celebrates in January, students can look forward to a special Epicurean menu to honor the culinary legacy of Black culture.
In addition to these events, Tigers are planning Tri-School gatherings to bring together BSUs, promoting inter-school unity and friendship. Plans for interactive activities and field trips, and a Harlem Renaissance-themed dance event in partnership with the social sciences department are also goals in the works.
The overall goal is to connect students with their roots and communities—relatives, friends and family—and to cultivate a school-wide appreciation for Black culture, history and contributions.
Stay tuned for upcoming events as these initiatives are brought to life!
